Ammonia burn? What does it look like?

My 2 year old has developed a weird rash on her buttocks. It is red, and almost scaly looking. I don't know. I don't *think* I have an ammonia problem, but it is possible.

What does an ammonia burn supposed to look like?

I put her in a sposie tonight with desitin to be sure. She just wears FB pockets at night/naps, and is in underwear during the day.

Is it red, slightly raised patches about the size of a dime, and when it's not damp looks like you could flake some of it off??

YES!
Though, her bum is usually dry because she is in underwear during the day. But, it is dry and scaly like.

I think of ammonia burn as red, like a sunburn, but I could be wrong!

I don't have an answer for what it is, but my baby girl gets it all the time. The only thing I have gotten it to go away with is the nipple ointment I had compounded for me when I had sores. It's the Dr. Newman's All Purpose Nipple Ointment. It contains an antibiotic, an anti-inflammatory, and an anti-fungal. http://breastfeeding.about.com/od/ni...iplenipple.htm

I had found a site that explained how to make your own version of it, but I can't find that link right now...I'll keep looking. I believe it just had equal amounts of an anti-biotic ointment (like neosporin), lotrimin ointment (for athlete's foot~not the cream) and a cortizone ointment (like cortaid~again not the cream).

I do think it is diaper related, and may be ammonia burns but I am not sure... My son would get blisters from ammonia, but my daughter just got those patches.

Sorry I don't have more answers. Good luck.
