vegan alternatives

I love knitting longies, but I wont use wool

I want to custom dye some yarn (was thinking of doing it with Kool Aid) for some longies.... is there anything I can do?

What kind of yarn are you planning on dying? Acid dyes are only usable for protein based fibers.

i don't believe kool-aid or wilton will work on plant-based fibers. Check out dharmatrading.com, they have all different kinds of dyeing supplies and instructions. You could use acrylic yarn, it would be like using polar fleece to sew longies. I've never used acrylic myself, but I know some mamas on here have.

i love acrylic, but i've been told i can't custom dye it. i would really really love to be able to. there are colorways swimming in my head that just aren't made.

Re: vegan alternatives

You can dye silk, soysilk, and nylon yarn with acid dyes or wiltons.

Just so you know, silk is a worm that they have to kill to get the silk from them, so soy silk would be a better option. I have seen some Poly dyes, wonder if they would dye acrylic?

Doesn't silk wick like cotton?
