Question knitting with circular needles?

I have knitted a scarf and I think it came out well. So, now I am going to try knitting a sheepy sack. The pattern says to use size 4 and size 7 16" circular needles. When I bought them only 29" needles were available in those sizes. I started knitting, but it doesn't seem right. Am I correct to assume that the length matters as well as the size? Is this to much for a newbie to attempt?

If your pattern called for 16" and you are using 29" circs, you won't have enough stitches to make it all the way around to form a circle--make sense?? Circs are my absolute favorite and not at all too difficult for a beginner. If anything, I think they make life easier for newbies b/c you don't have to sew any seams which is a total p.i.t.a. I have the Denise interchangable set which is great for 99% of what I knit, but then I have Addi Turbos for doing longies. The Addi needles come in a smaller circumfrence which is key once you get to knitting the legs.

Thanks! I cast on 80 stitches and it wasn't nearly enough, so I tried 120. I decided to just take off and go exchange my needles when they have the correct size. I saw the interchangeable set but it was $75 Can you buy them in pieces?

Generally you cannot buy 16" needles at stores like Joann's and things like that--you'll have to either order them online or find some at a local yarn store
I HAVE seen some interchangeable needles in pieces at Hobby Lobby though--they are not nice, super stiff, but they will do in a pinch!
Personally I wish I'd never bought cheep needles to begin with, I wish I'd just bought all addi's in the beginning!

That is good to know! I do know of a local yarn shop so I'll go check it out. I am just dying to learn to knit so I can do my own longies.

I would buy some 16" needles. They come in handy for Longies and hats. IMO you can never have too many needles!

Try Knitpicks.com... they have decent needles for cheap!

I second KnitPicks! I actually prefer their needles to Addis - KPs have sharper tips, and I'm a tight knitter, so I need that tip to get into my sts.

I recently found 16" no. 8s at Hobby Lobby. Check them out if you can. I think there's even a 30%-40% coupon for HL floating around the interwebs somewhere.
