Smile Let's Post Our Thrifty Menu's with Grocery Lists JANUARY

It seems like one of the most common question people ask thrifty mama's is how you grocery shop for so little and what the heck are you eating I thought it might be helpful if those of us who have successfully gotten our grocery budgets down could post a typical weeks menu and then also show their grocery list for that week, with numbers. For me, I have a family of 5 on a $50 a week grocery budget (no WIC or other other assistance). I'm still working on my menu for this week so I can post it with my grocery list in a bit-anyone else want to join me?

Re: Let's Post Our Thrifty Menu's with Grocery Lists

I need this! Tomorrow I think I'll make split pea soup w/ my leftover ham and ham bone. So that'll be a good cheap meal, but my dh doesn't care for it so much. I tend to spend at least $100 a wk on groceries for a family of four. DD is four and snacks alot but doesn't do meals so well, and DS is 10 months and has been eating solids (regular food) but doesn't really eat that much. DH thinks he has to have meat w/ every meal. Anyway, I'll be following this thread and will post my own recipes for my cheaper dishes I make.

Re: Let's Post Our Thrifty Menu's with Grocery Lists

Hopefully others will post theirs-here's mine for this week (I'm getting groceries on Wednesday so this is for Wednesday lunch till Tuesday)
Menu:

-lunch:Treat sandwiches with crackers, cheese slices, and apple slices
-supper:bbq chicken in the crockpot with mashed potatoes and homemade bread from the breadmaker
Thursday

Friday
-breakfast: cinnamon rolls from the breadmaker
-lunch: pepperoni pinwheels, chips, apple slices
-supper: ham and potato crockpot meal, homemade rolls, canned corn
Saturday
-pancake chocolate chip muffins
-lunch: grilled cheese sandwiches with fries (no fries in the deep fryer are not healthy but their sooo )
supper: spaghetti with garlic toast (need to find a recipe for the toast yet but will make it from scratch)
Sunday
-breakfast: cereal
-lunch: at inlaws (have not missed a Sunday dinner in 7 years )
-supper: pancakes and scrambled eggs
Monday
-breakfast: cheesy roll ups
-lunch: homemade macaroni and cheese, applesauce
-supper: homemade pizza and chips (make crust in breadmaker)
Tuesday
-breakfast: cereal
-lunch: left over mac n cheese, applesauce or apple slices
-supper: White Chili (this makes a lot and will be able to freeze enough for a couple more meals)

Grocery List for this week:
Aldis:
tube crescent rolls $1.50
apples 3lb bag x2 3.78
milk x3 gallons 5.07
bananas several pounds $2
fries 1.69
bbq sauce 1
elbow macaroni under 1
spaghetti noodles under 1
eggs x2 1.78
probiotic yogurt 1.69
chips 1.29
sour cream .89
oranges bag 3
taco sauce for white chili 2
white northern beans .75
their brand Fritos for white chili 1
$29.44
Meijer:
can treat spread 1.50
onion .75ish
pepper 1ish
1/2lb deli pepperoni 3
my pop (store brand cans) 3.70 which includes the can deposit
pop tarts for dh to bring to work 2.12
$12.07
Total: $41.51
The leftover $8.49 will go in my grocery envelope for next week in case I need extra. This allows me to stock up when a sale happens for meat, or for when I run low on baking supplies.
Everything else I already have in my pantry or fridge/freezer. I check these before I sit down to make my weekly menu and then make my menu around what I already have. Snacks will be apples, oranges, bananas, brown bread (a banana bread I make), home made cookies, popcorn, yogurt
I want to try and make my own tortillas for the first time this week so either it will go well or I'll be buying a package for $1 after I catch my kitchen on fire LOL!

So are casseroles/crockpot meals the way to go? Because DH is really picky about having his food mixed together, so those don't work for us (about the only exception is if I do an asian-style stir fry, and even then he must be able to recognize all the vegetables).

Sara - what is treat spread?
its something my mil makes and she got me hooked on it
Treat Spread (like a sandwich spread)
2 boiled eggs
2tbsp Miracle whip or mayo
1 can Treat (you can find it next to the Spam but its NOT Spam, its called Treat or Treet-its in a can like Spam)
shredded cheese-depends on how much you like, I usually do 1 cup or so
mix together and mash with a hand masher. Spread on bread and enjoy
