Question Non Vaxing Military Wife/Mamas!

I have a ? for you. If your dh gets orders overseas, what do you do? We're in HI right now, and dh may get orders to Okinawa. Have any of you dealt with this? I don't think ds can go without vaxes, right? Don't you have to have them for a passport? Would they end up sending dh unaccompanied instead? TIA ladies! -Amber

Re: Non Vaxing Military Wife/Mamas!

I just asked DH and it's entirely possible that it'll be unaccompanied. But the question is that if he's on orders, then having vaxes for the passport may not be necessary. Neither one of us really know.. but that's something worth asking the BSB (where you can get your passports) or the clinic. The clinic should be able to let you know what you can do if you claim religious, philosophical or medical exemption from vaxes.

Good luck and repost when you find out!! I'm interested to know the outcome of this!

I would think that they will make you get the kids vaccinated....b/c Japan might require it...I have a friend who is about to go to Japan and her kids had to be vaccinated!

because this got my curiosity up, I'll go to my clinic tomorrow and ask the SSG at the immunoclinic and then ask one of my friends that's a personnel CPT.

Re: Non Vaxing Military Wife/Mamas!

Hi there,

I'm in Okinawa and my boys and older dd are partially vaxed and my youngest was born here and has never been vaxed so no it won't affect anything. No one even asked us about vaxes coming here. Passports have nothing to do with vaxes and no one, not even the military, can make a dependent get vaxes even overseas. I had a mound of paperwork on laws and such ready to put up a fight if they tried to say we had to vax but it ended up being a total non-issue. Even our ped here says that while he'd rather we went ahead and vax'ed, it is our decision and he has to respect that.

You are more than welcome to pm me if you like.

Jeni

ETA: The only vax I know of that is required for travel is yellow fever and it's only required for certain countries where yellow fever is a threat. Mostly the Middle Eastern, African and South American countries where families aren't generally allowed to go with a service member anyways. We've traveled all over Japan, criss crossed the states en route to international locations and to Europe and never has anyone asked for vaccination records when we went through Immigration and customs. In fact, the Japanese vaccination schedule is much smaller than the US. They believe in cleanliness to prevent most diseases and only vaccinate for a select few. They also will not bring a young baby (less than 6 mos) out in public hardly at all to protect them from germs. The Japanese ladies at the grocery store were floored when I took my week old baby to the store with me.

they cant make you do anything because you arent the military member...however that said if they request it etc. and they might, they can make the tour unaccompanied no matter what. The mililtary is pretty one track when it comes to things like that and its either their way or the highway with anything I'm prior military myself and my husband is still in .
