Stinky Pail

Okay, it may just be that the weather is warming, but my diaper pail STINKS! I wash every other day, I have a pail bag that I wash along with the dipes, I've been throwing in a washcloth with TTO. What else can I do to make my pail NOT smell like a bucket of ammonia?

I pour a little bit of Bac Out in the bottom of my bag (in a pail) and that helps. You can also use baking soda!

What's Bac Out?

I use TTO or Lavendar or sometimes Pail Pals... oh my goodness do they ever smell good!!!! I ordered some for my store & I think I'll end up using them all LOL

I have heard that keeping the pail closed actually like confines the smell and makes it worse... I know some people leave it open. But w/2 dogs no way can I do that.

Re: Stinky Pail

I dumped some baking soda in the bottom of my pail when it got really bad a couple of weeks ago. That worked wonders and lasted for 2-3 weeks. I use a wet bag in the pail and wash it with the dipes so it got a little of the baking soda on the bottom of it but not a problem.

Someone told me that you can make your own "pail pals" by taking a bowl of baking soda, adding a little water, TTO, Lavendar, or something like that...just a few drops to make it the consistency of play-dough. Roll it into little balls (or wafers I guess!) and let it dry. The little balls can go in the wash with the diapers. I haven't tried this...just haven't gotten around to picking up any TTO or lavendar.

Once the baking soda in the pail wore off and it started to stink again, I sat it outside to air out and in the meantime I just hung the wet bag on the doorknob and skipped the pail altogether. Believe it or not, I haven't noticed any odor that way. I think that keeping it pinned up in the pail does concentrate the odor and make it worse. I actually prefer to keep my bag hanging on the doorknob but if you hung it on a hanger on the back of the door or something, would that keep it out of reach of the pets (and exploring toddlers)?

Good luck!

Great thread as I started realizing it myself with our pail. *yuck* I'll have to get baking soda for the pail and will try to make my own diaper discs/balls aswell! Thanks for the hint, Barb!

Re: Stinky Pail

There's a recipe for deodorizing disks at the bottom of this page.

I found that dry pailing Isabel's overnight dipes was a major contributor to stink. I now wet pail these and it has helped a bit.

Thanks for the link! I'm planning on passing it on to a friend I'm trying to convience to do cloth diapers- I know she's open to saving money and asked about making her own paper towel wipes, so maybe these will give her an extra push!

Re: Stinky Pail

I have a friend who sprinkles some carpet deodorizer at the bottom of her pail. (y'know...between her liner and the actual pail so none of it comes in contact with her dipes) She says it works pretty well.
