So why don't fathers get super-human hearing?

My newborn is nearly 3 weeks old. She sleeps in our room in a co-sleeper. I sleep closest to her, but it's only a queen sized bed -- my husband isn't that much farther away.

Ever since baby's come home, I have acquired super-mommy hearing. You know, the kind of hearing that enables you to wake up as soon as you hear the baby moving around and smacking her lips.

My husband, however, has not acquired this super-human hearing. He blissfully sleeps through almost everything except for her actually crying.

There's not actually a point to this mini-vent, I just wanted to share this observation :-)

Hehe I saw a documentary on a study done on male/female hearing once and boy it explained a LOT. Women can basically hear everything that is going on and men are able to focus on a single thing and don't hear everything else that is going on. So basically what they were saying is that men can focus on the ball game on TV and not hear a single other thing going on and women/mamas hear every little noise that is being made. Our brains are hard-wired like that. Men's brains are hard-wired like that. Interesting. And how convenient for guys/daddies!!

Wow that explains a lot! No wonder I can say something to DH and get no response. I have to actually say his name, wait for him to say "what?" and then talk, otherwise he does not hear anything!

Yeah, at our house, DH will sleep through almost everything--DS has to be wailing for a good 20-30 seconds before it wakes up his dad. Me, of course, I'm awake as soon as the little guy even moves, sometimes even before DS himself wakes up.

Haha! I always thought it was just selective hearing!! lol I think part of it might be still though. I don't get how the baby can be screaming her head off and DH is still sleeping through it. I think he just pretends to be asleep so he doesn't have to get up with her. That could just be my DH though....

I have wondered this many times!! Mine can sleep through almost anything. Just wait! That super mom hearing gets even better ans mixes with this spidey sense thing where you can watch your toddler by listening. It's crazy! You can be in another room and know exactly what they are up to. You may be in the kitchen or bathroom and suddenly run to your toddler because of a sound you heard that was not on the safe and acceptable list of sounds.

My DH can sleep thru DS screaming in the same room. I wake up when I hear either boy stirring in another room.
