Cut-up cakes/Pound cake

I'm going to make DS a train cake for his Bday and all the recipes I've found call for using pound cakes to cut-up. I just wonder if I have to use pound cake or can I bake, freeze and cut up a white/yellow cake mix? I'm just not sure what pound cake w/ buttercream frosting would taste like, kwim??

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated! TIA!

I think it would still taste good. IDK if regular cake is stable enough, even frozen..

I love pound cake, with any kind of frosting!

I think pound cake is often recommended because it is easy to cut and frost, whereas sometimes white cake is trickier to frost once cut.

A helpful tip for making train cakes- use mini loaf pans -- one for the engine, caboose and each car. That way you can use any cake recipe you want, freeze them, whatever and they are already the perfect size.

Totally didn't think about mini loaf pans; good idea!
