WWYD? Can I prep and freeze sandwiches like these??
http://www.jlist.com/IMAGE/G9OAw
This idea for bento lunch looks great. I am wondering if I could prepare and freeze sandwiches with scrambeled eggs/tuna/whatever inside?? I would vacuum seal them.... If you are a bento box Mom: are there things you prep in advance and freeze/fridge them?? Or do you have to make everything fresh in the morning?

The sandwiches would get soggy as they thaw. Unfortunately, sandwiches isn't something you can really do in advance.

Pillsbury makes those pb&j frozen sandwiches. I've never had them, we don't eat jelly (dd's diabetic), but I think you could do the same thing at home.

There's a good bit of bento stuff that can be done in advance! I'll be back after work with links for you. Sandwiches do work, but they need to be wrapped TIGHTLY, and Im not sure how the tuna fish would hold up..although I don't see any problems.

Re: WWYD? Can I prep and freeze sandwiches like these??
Nope, the jelly or jam would make the sandwich soggy as it thaws. Pillsbury does all kinds of chemical hocus-pocus to those things, that I doubt you could replicate at home, even if you wanted to.

Re: WWYD? Can I prep and freeze sandwiches like these??
My mom has always made my dads sandwiches a week at a time and he just takes them out of the freezer every night before bed. He is kinda plain though, ham & mayo or anything and mayo
I dont think adding cheese would be a big deal but I dont think tomato or lettus would hold up at all! My BIL makes his lunch at work but prepares it all at home. He cuts his tomato and packages it, same with cheese meat and lettus. He assembles it at work. It seems like to much work for me but it works for him.

Re: WWYD? Can I prep and freeze sandwiches like these??
I'm all for make-it-ahead stuff, but I thought the premise of bento was to eat fresh foods? So, for bento purposes, I don't think freezing foods ahead would work quite the same.
I'm wondering if you could freeze rolled up coldcuts and cheese ahead and take a couple out each day and just put the bread in separately or just supply the carbs/starch another way? Whole wheat Wasa bread maybe? |
