Colic & Acid Reflux in a 9week old!?

My friends DR told her that her 9 week old is Colic & has Acid Reflux and to help she needs to give him baby cereal in a bottle ..... is that right? It sounded funny to me but I wanna be sure that info is okay.

Any other things she can do?

Re: Colic & Acid Reflux in a 9week old!?

I bf my reflux babies (except the first, he had to go on a hypoallergenic predigested soy formula) and so I never added cereal to their "diets". All 3 of my boys have needed to be put on Zantac and Reglan to hold down their feeds and to keep the acid out of their throats and noses.
It sounds like your friends dr is just doing the first step in trying to treat the reflux.
I highly reccomend the Tucker Sling/wedge combo. Its a wedge shaped foam mattress with a sling attached to it. My boys slept on this to keep their food down in their tummies. It was a life saver! MY 3rd ds went off all his meds once he was sleeping on the wedge regularly. Also she needs to keep the baby somewhat upright for about an hour after each feeding (the tucker sling works great for this.)
My dr also allowed me to put my reflux babies to sleep on their tummies because she said when reflux babies lay on their stomachs the little "flap" in the asophagus closes and doesnt allow acid and food back up.

I have heard that too. Makes it thicker and supposedly easier to stay down. I have no personal experience though.

Don't do it. It will usually just constipate them and while they strain to poop, they will reflux worse. We got on Zantac. As far as "colic" tell her to read The Happiest Baby ont he Block and try Gripe Water for gas.

Personally thats what I was thinking! I know when my DS had cereal for 1 week he was so plugged up as was DD so they never got it again!

I will try and find the book for her & where would I get the Gripe Water?
