13month old won't sleep
Hi Mamas
Our 13 month old DS is having some major issues with sleeping at night. He goes down for his 2 naps fine, but when it comes to going to bed at night he wants no part of it. We bedshare. At naptimes I just lie him on the bed and he goes to sleep with minimal fussing. At night though it is just awful. We lie him in there with his last bottle and he is quiet while he drinks it. As soon as its done he starts fussing and it just continues to escalate. DH and I take turns going in and lieing with him. Finally we have to bring him back into the living room to play. Its almost 11:45 right now and he is playing. We tried for an hour and a half to get him to sleep. The later DS goes to bed, the later we stay up so that we can unwind. Its turning into a vicious cycle. ANy words of wisdom? Should try cutting out nap number 2? He is such a crank without though. Help. . .

Re: 13month old won't sleep
you may have to cut out the second nap time if it is later during the day. You also should be consistent with his sleep time. We had troubles with dd at first and decided. you know what, 9pm is bedtime! So at 9pm she goes to lay down NO questions! Even if she fusses, she needs to learn thats bedtime. If you and your husband take him away from bedtime and bring him out to the livingroom to play, what did he just learn? If I fuss enough I don't have to go to bed, kwim? It was hard the first week but trust me, they get used to it! Being on a schedule really does help! GOODLUCK

Re: 13month old won't sleep
Our ods, 17mo, does this sometimes. Mostly when he's teething but if you continue to get him out he learns that quick and will keep it up! We finally had to do no questions asked too! Bed at 8:00 and you can cry and fuss all you want. Eventually (when he was fighting us or we'd go get him) he'd get to the point where he was TOO tired to sleep and just wouldnt go! He cried for about 7minutes and was out! It's just a small road bump!

Re: 13month old won't sleep
I am having the same problem almost! Some days DD will only take her morning nap and she'll skip her afternoon nap and then go to bed at a decent time. But on the days when I have to pick her up after school she will pass out in the car on the way home and then she's up FOREVER! Also she keeps waking up in the middle of the night crying. *sigh* Hopefully some more mamas will comment on this thread and help us sleepy mamas!

Re: 13month old won't sleep
I'm really not a fan of cry it out. If we let him cry he just escalates and then makes himself sick. Then we have to get him out of bed to change the sheets. And like I said, we don't just do this for 20 minutes, its like an hour and a half that this goes on for. We finally just got him to sleep at 12:45.

Re: 13month old won't sleep
How long does he typically sleep at night and how long are his naps?
If he goes to bed this late does he then sleep in longer?

Re: 13month old won't sleep
When is he napping, like what times, and how long does he sleep at night?
He might be ready to drop that morning nap, but you'll need to move up bedtime. My son goes to bed around seven. He used to go to bed at 6 during the nap transition. He wakes up around 8 no matter what time I put him to bed. 13 months was also when he got his molars and I know that hurts more at night so you're probably in for some more sleep disruption soon. |

Usually he will sleep for 4 to 5 hours then wake up and have some milk and go back to sleep for a while longer. If he goes to bed late, he will sleep late. This morning he slept till 10 and so did we!

Re: 13month old won't sleep
He is working on getting his molars. All but one has cut through.

I do agree with PP about not letting him get up and play. DS definitely figured out fast that if he fought it he could get up and it just got worse and worse till we started keeping it in the bedroom with very dim light and soft music etc. |
