Help With Cleaning Used Diapers

I have 2 main questions about using used cloth diapers. I think I saw a thread on this a week ago or so, but I can't find it. Sorry to be repetitive!

So about 2 weeks ago, my daughter had croup. I recently told a friend I would loan her one of my fitteds so she could try it out. When I wash my diapers, I use about 5 drops of TTO per load, will that be enough to kill any germs or will I have to bleach it or something? I don't want her baby to catch croup! DD is completely recovered, and no longer contagious, but I just want to make sure her diapers aren't contagious either!

Also, I've just bought some cloth diapers used off of ebay, and I think I remember reading that I should bleach them before I use them. They are pockets and AIOs, and I'm worried that I'll damage the diapers (particularly the waterproof outer layer) or ruin the colours or something, before I even use them. Am I worried about nothing?

TIA!

I think the people that use bleach use a cap full with the water set on the highest setting. I could be wrong though.

I also think that adding boiling water would be good!

Croup wouldn't spread thru a dipe, it's airborne. Stuff like staph will spread on fabric, but a respiratory illness wouldn't make it without a wet/human host.
But, that being said, I still use about 1/8 C. of bleach in that first wash whenever I get new used dipes, just to be on the safe side. Just make sure it goes in mixed with a good amount of water to prevent bleach spots!

I agree with the PP that croup won't spread through dipes. I also use about 1/8 cup of bleach in any used diapers I buy on the hottest setting with a big pan of boiling water dumped in. I let the washer fill completely up add the bleach let it agitate a little then add the dipes. HTH

Re: Help With Cleaning Used Diapers

We never use bleach or tto. I just run used diapers through a couple of hot (very hot) loads then dry on hot. This has worked great for us.

I run all used dipes on hot w/bleach, then run several more times w/just water to be sure the bleach rinses completely down.
