Re: Acid Reflux getting out of control! Please help!

I don't have any advice, although I'll be taking some from this thread! But, I wanted to just I understand. I few nights ago I woke up literally gagging on stomach acid. I throw up in my mouth too. It's awful. So, I understand how you feel. I hope you get some relief soon, and me too.

Heather - I just barfed this week too from gagging on stomach acid - then I peed my pants. LOL!

OP: Milk is actually an acid not a base so I can see where it might irritate. I hate the reflux!

I can sympathize! At my appt. yesterday the midwife prescribed me omeprazole. I can't remember what it is generic for. She knows I don't like taking anything, but I have tried all the natural remedies and I can't take it anymore!

Milk has a pH of 6.5-6.7 so it is *slightly* acidic, but extremely close to neutral (7). You would have to have a pH meter or narrow range pH paper to detect it as an acid. Which is funny since we think of milk as soothing heartburn!

So, for those who've used vinegar, does any work or just the apple cider vinegar I saw one mama mention? And can you taste it much if you mix it with something else? I could probably stomach that if I needed to try something other than the enzymes, if it would help...

Re: Acid Reflux getting out of control! Please help!

Omeprazole is Pepcid I think. My doc had me on Pepcid while trying to figure out if I had gallstones or was pg. He said Pepcid was safe to take while pg. I used to live on Zantac and it just stopped working for me, so I was glad the Pepcid worked.

Now I just avoid eating dairy at night (no ice-cream, no fair!), and limit tomatoes and juices, I also have an ongoing problem with imitation vanilla flavoring giving me reflux which is slightly bizarre!

Omeprazole is generic for prilosec. I'm on prescription strength when not pregnant. My docs and midwives told me absolutely not while pregnant so you may want to check into that further!!!

I take OTC Zantac, and 2Tums smoothies at a time as needed. Doesn't do nearly as well as my prilosec... but it helps.
