Did DH ruin my cast iron pot????

So I thought cast iron was indestructible, but ever since DH left my dutch oven SOAKING IN THE SINK OVERNIGHT , I've had problems with it.

After the big soak fiasco, I spent many hours scouring--and rescouring--off the rust and reseasoning it. After all of this, there isn't any visible rust left, and it *looks* as good as it ever did, but everything I cook in it tastes like crap. I fried chicken, it tasted like rust. Today I made a pot of beans, and it tasted horrible as well--like a rusty, disgusting cast iron pan.

I keep thinking that maybe there's some rust on the pan that I'm missing, so I keep scrubbing and reseasoning it....am I just wasting my time? Someone please tell me I'm not past the point of no return! Any advice?? I really love my cast iron.

How did you reseason it? I have had the best luck with baking it on 250 in the oven with Crisco for several hours. Lmk if you need more ideas.

Ugh. I've always used vegetable oil to reseason, and never had any issues. Guess this time I need to break out the heavy-duty artillery.

Cast iron are supposed to last a lifetime and then some. I don't think he ruined it but it might take some work to get it back. People find old ones and restore them all he time. Maybe some super seasoning like the others suggested. I love my cast iron too. Maybe we should start our own cast iron loving thread.

Yup, I was going to say people find ancient cast iron and revive them all the time, so it shouldn't be lost. Just keep at it, it'll come back.

Re: Did DH ruin my cast iron pot????

im not sure what my pan was made out of, but I have a similar story! I got a 9 x13 pan of some sort, it was gray in color, not glass. One night after making chicken parm in it, i came the next morning after it soaking overnight to rust in it everywhere!!! i tried scrubbing and used it to cook again, and boy! did it taste AWFUL!!! I can't wait to try this!
