Please help me convince DH!
I told DH once that one of his daughter's carseats are expired. I said you need to throw it out and get a new one. He looked at me like I'm nuts and said "it's fine" and went on his merry way.
DH does NOT want to get new carseats for the kids. But we need some--if I'm going to continue working we need a new seat for DD for his car (a high back booster at least) and his daughter needs a new one. My DS can use his daughter's other seat (the one that's not expired) in his car when he takes him to daycare, and both my kids have good seats in my car. So really we just need a good 5-point harness booster for his daughter and a good high back booster for mine. And, of course, one for the new baby by October. What is the difference in safety for a high back booster vs. a regular no back booster for my DD? She'll be 5 in early May and is 42lbs I believe (maybe a little more). DH will NOT like the idea of buying new seats. I WONT let my kids ride in an expired seat and my DS rides rear facing. He's 17 mos and 24lbs. My DSD (the one who rides in the expired seat) is 2yrs and 3 months, and somewhere around 36-38lbs. I need some GOOD material, websites, and you-tube videos to help convince him that putting any child in that expired seat can be fatal. He also needs to know how important it is to be sure they are all installed correctly, etc. I'm sure you ladies here have some convincing materials

Re: Please help me convince DH!
I know there are ladies here that will be able to give you the youtube links to expired seats... so that i'm sure will be covered.
For your 5 year old DD... could you still harness her? She doesn't seem very big... maybe you could get her a Nautilus? That way you've got the harness, plus the high-back booster and backless booster all in one, so that when you need it it's there. In fact, I'd go for the Nautilus for both of the girls! AND you can get it in a nice pretty girly pattern too! (mariposa is what the pattern is called that we got, it's pink/grey and has butterflies on it!)

Re: Please help me convince DH!
I don't have materials handy to link you to, but do you also want carseat recommendations? Since money is an issue I would start with an Evenflo Maestro for the 5 point harness (about $80) and a Graco turbobooster for the 5 year old. I posted links the other day showing crash tests of both a low back booster and a high back booster. I'll see if I can find them.

Re: Please help me convince DH!
Okay, I have a few links now.
Side impact crashes and boosters No back booster crash test High back booster crash test (minimal "wings") High back booster crash test (deep "wings") If you think you can convince your dh to get a harnessed seat for your 5 year old, she is a bit young for a booster. So maybe two Evenflo Maestros? |

Re: Please help me convince DH!
I think Maestros will be your most cost effective option. They don't make great boosters once the harness is outgrown, so you will need to buy a dedicated booster at a later time, but it will allow you to keep both kids harnessed for a minimal price.
There are some things I am willing to negotiate with my husband on, unfortunately car seats are not one of these things, he has learned over the years to default to me and just nod and say "yes dear" when it comes to car seats. We have had a lot over the years and DH has realized that I have literally poured over every bit of information I could get my hands on to come to my choices for seats for our kids so he protests at the price but only minimally now. LOL. Anyway...with a DH who is giving some resistance I would share with him the vid of the expired Britax seat that is linked to above, then present the option of a couple of Evenflo Maestros which are simple inexpensive seats that will get you where you need to be. If you have to I would even negotiate with DH on the new baby's seat. Say you will skip the carrier seat and go right to a convertible (True Fit, My Ride and Radian all fit newborns well) minimizing the expense of Car seats for the new baby and allowing wiggle room in the budget for new seats for the bigger kids. For my newest babe I borrowed an infant seat for a few months from my sister in law....reliable source so I knew it was safe to use....when I presented DH with the car seat options and told him that the one I wanted to get was $300 I just argued that we didn't have to buy an infant seat, we don't buy diapers and we don't buy formula. I said that the cost of the seat is as much as 3 months formula (our first two babies were formula fed and disposable diapers so he was able to relate to that). Putting everything in to monetary context works well because my husband equates a dollar value to everything, so when it was all broken down he accepted it and we bought the seat I wanted. Now I just wish car seats weren't so darn expensive in Canada. |

I found this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2kO8AxKbrM What do you think? I like how it has side-by-side comparison. But the high back booster looks really, really flexible--not sturdy like a booster would be? IDK anything about crash tests though. DH lost a child when she was 3.5 due to chILD (Internal lung disease). That's just a few months older than the boy in this video. He knows what it's like to lose a child and seeing something like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azgBhZfcqaQ&NR=1 should get to him. I don't want to UPSET him, but I want him to seriously listen to what I'm saying. I'll be talking to him about A LOT tonight and this will be 1 of the things we're going to talk about. I think I'll save this video for if he doesn't want to believe how serious this all is. I'm going through others. I need to convince my XH that my DS needs to be RF at all times. That one will be much harder.

Yes. I definitely need to show some financial advantages as well. Part of my "I need to stay at home" argument is that we'll only need 1 carseat per child. Which means the only carseat we'd need to buy right now is his daughter's (for my vehicle) and then one for the new baby before October. And the True Fit is good for 7 yrs, so by the time the baby's out of it I think by then my DD might be old enough to be in a normal seat or at least a cheaper booster. The True Fit's harness is good until 65 lbs ![]() I'll go get some prices to compare (infant + harness + high back booster + booster = $$$ VS. convertible = $ VS. Child in the right carseat during a motor vehicle accident = PRICELESS ) and present those to him later. I feel like I'm going in front of a committee or something

Re: Please help me convince DH!
Ok... So, should we get a true fit for the new baby? We would transfer DS (will be 2 at the time the new baby is born) to a new nautilus (saves us about $20) and put the new baby in DS's True Fit. Then when that seat is expired or the new baby grows out of it, we can buy a Nautilus or similar for the new baby.
OR Should we buy another true fit (or similar) for the new baby and keep DS in the True Fit until he's 65 lbs then move him to a booster? There are so many variables and I've been doing this all day and have other things to think about too. I'm going to give my SELF a headache--let alone my poor, clueless-about-car-seats, DH.

Re: Please help me convince DH!
Can you give the run down of what kids you have (weights & ages) and what seats you have? (Don't list any expired seats.) Also what cars each kid rides in and how often?
For example my list would be: kids - 3.5 yo dd, 35#; 1.5 yo ds, 25# seats - 2 bv's, 1 rn, 1 fpsvd [don't worry about the abbreviations - just give brands & models of your carseats] cars - both kids ride in dh's car (97 subaru legacy) and my car (99 altima) on a regular basis |
