My Mood:
Fenugreek/Blessed Thistle OK while pregnant?

I'm in my first trimester and my 19 month old nursling is sad that her milk supply appears to be diminishing.

Is it safe to use these herbs while pregnant? Will it even help?

Any advice on nursing while pregnant?

Re: Fenugreek/Blessed Thistle OK while pregnant?

Fenugreek is not okay while pg because it is a uterine stimulant. I am not sure about other herbs, but your milk is going to turn back into colostrum for the newbie and that is what you want to happen anyway, ya know? Normally that doesn't happen until the 2nd trimester even if you are having a slight supply dip now.

I would just let your toddler take the lead on the tandeming thing. She may quit for a time while the milk is "gone" and may want to start back up again when the baby is born. Helping her to understand that your body is starting to make "different milk" to take care of the new baby can be a good "intro" to getting a sibling. Of course talking about this depends on your child and how you think they will feel about the idea that the new baby is changing things up for her. Nursing two can be hard, but in my experience it is a good time for toddlers to start to learn to think of others (baby) before themselves. The nursing relationship can be a nice, safe place to teach that. Your oldest doesn't get cut off from nursing of course, but she learns that baby goes first because baby is tiny and needs a lot of milk to grow and can't eat any other foods like a big girl, etc, etc. Also, having a nursing toddler around in the early days of engorgement with a newborn was a God send!
