BF as BC?

I've always heard that if you BF on demand for the first six months, that is good birth control. Is this true? I am not going back on hormonal BC, and DH doesn't like condoms (he'll use them, but he doesn't like them). I usually do NFP, but I don't know how accurate temping is when BF, and I don't expect my period before nine months, anyway (that's when it came back with DS1). TIA for clearing up my confusion.

BF definitely reduces your chances of conceiving, but you should still be charting as soon as you notice any cervical mucus. PM me if you want - I use NFP and BF.

Re: BF as BC?

It is true, but there are some pretty specific guidelines to make it more effective. Google Lactation Amenorrhea Method and it should give you a lot more information!

ETA: Some of the guidelines are no pacifiers, no bottles EVER, breastfeeding totally on demand even through the night, co-sleeping, etc. If you do all that, I think the info says it is 97% effective until 6 months or your cycle returns.

Re: BF as BC?

Be very careful doing this -- I got AF back at 3 months and I definitely ovulated prior to this!

Re: BF as BC?

I feed on demand but my baby has never gotten up more than once a night to eat and started STTN at 8 or 9 weeks (he's 12 weeks now and we go 11-7 every night). I've noticed increased CM lately so we use condoms. Not my first choice lol but I figure our safest option of prevention while my body figures out what it wants to do

Re: BF as BC?

I BF on demand around the clock and AF came back at 6 weeks pp without any warning signs. I'll definitely be charting this time around if we're not using other BC!

Re: BF as BC?

I did it all by the book and now have a 6 month old that was conceived 6 months PP. My older boy never had a bottle, never was off the boob, slept with and on me (when he slept), never had solids, and I got PG. Not all women get high enough prolactin to keep ovulation away.

Re: BF as BC?

Im at almost 7 months postpartum and still not pregnant lol! But ds nurses like a newborn still, he doesnt want any other food, nurses every 2-3 hours during the day (if not more) and every 3-4 hours at night. no pacifiers, little amounts of baby food. ive only pumped and left him with my mom twice, and was only gone for one feeding.
