Duggar Liquid Laundry Detergent?

Would a bar of all natural and pure olive oil work as the soap? Do you have to make the 5 gallons and then water it by half or can you just use half as much and keep it in the 5 gal pail? Anyone know if it will work with cold water washes?

I've used this recipe for about a year now. We only wash on cold (except for diapers) and it's worked fine. I don't know about changing the soap. We've always used Fels Naptha, but I can't imagine why it wouldn't work. I don't totally understand your other question. Sorry. We've always made the whole big batch and then put some into an old detergent bottle as needed.

Olive oil soap tend to be slimy in consistency. My research on making soap for laundry has been that it needs to be mostly coconut oil or palm something with more lather. Olive oil is wonderful for skin but not the best in cleaning terms, IME.

thanks, they make a 5 gal pail full and then say to keep refilling your old laundry detergent half way and then fill it with water again so it is dilluted by half. I figure if I just keep it in the 5 gal pail then I should be able to use half has much as they say too if I were to water it down more.

I tried that, but I think it needs a REALLY good shake every now & again that stirring just doesn't do it. I have a few light stains on my towels from chunks that didn't get broken up because I tried the only use 1/2 and don't dilute method. And I am also NOT a fan of Fels Naptha, as it REALLY lightened up my darks leading to not black blacks.

Does anyone know how much this costs per load? If not, don't worry about it... just curious.

super cheap! It takes 1 bar of soap and very minimal borax and washing soda so it makes 10 gal for about $4ish and then I can use a half cup at a time (top loader, front loader is half that). It'd work out to pennies a load.

I use the sun laundry bars. Not fels naptha. Haven't noticed any fading, and it's taking the stains out better the store bought. I'd say it cost about $2 Canadian for a 5 gallon pail.

Re: Duggar Liquid Laundry Detergent?

Wow! I haven't really looked at that recipe till now. If I use Dr. Bronners, it will cost apprx. $4 maybe $5 and at 180 loads that is about 3 cents a load! I can't wait till I run out of my Costco detergent.

I don't mean to hijack your thread but I have a question. If you use it, how do you fill a detergent bottle? I am thinking you would have to stir it in the 5 gallon container, then use a ladle and funnel to put it into the detergent bottle. Is there an easier way?
