Do I really need the Ergo Infant Insert?

I recently found an Ergo carrier on FSOT and am excited to use it! But, do I need to buy the infant insert for a newborn? Some reviews online said that using a blanket or small wrap works just as well. Any advice??

yes and no... The insert is made for using, you can substitute something else. Personally when they are new I found it really bulky and prefered a ring sling or a moby wrap for the first few months. Good luck mama!

I recently tried one on, and HATED the insert. For the amount that the insert costs, I decided to use another carrier until my little guy is 14 lbs.

Good to know! I've heard good things about the Moby wrap but it looks complicated! Any thoughts?

I got my ergo at around 2 months (I think?) LOVE LOVE LOVE it!! I tried the insert, it was bulky and my baby freaked out she acted like it was squashing her. She did fine with nothing from then on. Maaaybe if you find it super cheap give it a try. But for the super tiny phase I'd go with ring sling. That's what worked for us. Or a wrap, which is time consuming and not easy when running in and out of the store. But lots of ppl love them for nb's, and I love wraps at home when she's gona be in there for a bit. Congrats, hope you love your ergo like we do!

I didn't so much hate the insert, but I wasn't crazy about it-- it did create a nice bridge from the Moby to the Ergo, though. There was a point, when DD was about 14 lbs, that she seemed to heavy for the Moby but she didn't have enough head control for the Ergo, so for that few weeks, the insert was great. Now, this is the new insert (Heart to Heart) not the old, taco-style one. I did hate that one.

As for the Moby, there is a pretty steep learning curve, but after you get the hang of it, it's AWESOME! I consider it one of the "can't live without" newborn things.

we bought the insert to go with our Ergo but DD hated it and she just didn't feel secure in there. So we used the moby and a babyhawk until she was big enough for the Ergo. But now I can't stand using the Ergo because I just looove my babyhawk

I just got my ergo and my DD is 6 weeks old (weighs 6lbs 8oz right now, was a preemie) and I got the insert bc of her size...well, I hate it. I used it for all of about 10 mins and it felt so bulky and she was miserable bc it didn't allow for her to be close enough to me. I put it back in the box and haven't looked back. Total waste of $25.

I have the heart to heart insert and love it. My little guy who is 10 weeks old and about 14 lbs is just so snuggly in it. To those who didn't like the insert, were you using the older (taco style as a momma above put it) insert or the new H2H insert?

I was using the H2H insert and it felt like I shoved her in a cocoon and then put her in my carrier. It just didn't work for us.
