Combined 3/4 year old preschool?

The closest, more convenient preschool to us combines the 3 and 4 year olds into the same class. I really like the school, the teachers and the organization, but I'm not sure about the split age class. There is a HUGE difference btn 3 and 4 year olds. Anyone have any experience with this? Or is ECE educated and have an opinion?

Re: Combined 3/4 year old preschool?

Well, my church has their preschool class set up like this for their weekday preschool program. I'd send my 2 youngest kids there but a)it is too far for more than once a week and b) they are 14.5 months apart and I don't want them in the same class.

That said, in watching my 2 together (DS is 20 months and DD is 34 months-not quite old enough for preschool) I can tell you that the younger one can do much more at his age than his sister could when she was that age. He is such a little imitator and he does his utmost to keep up with her. She, on the other hand is progressing forward and is on her age level or above as far as her skills are concerned. She also takes care of her little brother and is doing her utmost to gently teach him to share.

Honestly, I think that having the combined ages helps both ages learn social skills better and encourages the younger ones to stretch a little more in imitation of the older ones.

DS's school-based preschool has threes and fours together, plus a few that have turned five since school started...I volunteer twice a week. Honestly, I don't see a huge difference. The kids all play well together...sit well together for story time...seem to understand concepts about the same. Obviously, most of the threes are a bit smaller than some of the other kids, but there have never been bullying issues or anything. The threes tend to be a bit more apprehensive (one of the 3 year old girls is still crying every morning) to try new things, but often jump right in once they see how much fun everyone is having.

This is good to hear. I do like everything else. And ds will be an "older" 3, with a Feb birthday. Right now he's in a 2 year old preschool and some of the kids seem really young compared to him. He's made friends with the other kids (mostly girls) that have early birthdays, too.

We were going to put DD at a Montessori school and they have all the kids ages 3-6 in one big class. It was an amazing program. 3-4 years old together wouldn't bother me at all.

Especially since you like the program and teachers, I wouldn't worry about the ages.

I think 4-5 yr olds are a bigger diff.
the 3-4 should be fine.
we are doing 3-4 yr this summer. I am so excited for my little guy!! he loved it when we looked at the class.

All four of our girls (two daughters and two nieces) attended preschools with 3-4yo in class together. Worked out great.
