family doctor vs pediatrician

Who do you go to and why?

DS is not vaccinated. I know pediatricians are notorious for pushing vaccines. I haven't been to DS's first pediatrician since he was 2 months old. She gave us an order to go to health department for vaccines. I never did. I tried a family doctor at his 4 month well baby. He was supportive of our choice, but he just didn't seem competent, kwim? Even though the ped pushed vaccines, she at least seemed to actually be intelligent. So, I'm reluctant to try another family doctor, because I would prefer someone that specializes in babies.

Anyone wanna persuade me into trying another family doctor? (I HATE this searching around for a doctor. Blah )

Re: family doctor vs pediatrician

Here you're only seen by family doctors. We have no peds. There was 1 who used to come to our city, but you had to have a referral from your family dr & he only saw kids who had problems. now if you want a ped you have to go to the city 3hours away.

Personally I like our family dr. He sees the girls, me & dh. He knows our(dh & I) history so he knows of anything that may need to be watched out for due to genetics. Our girls will not have to switch to a different dr when they are "too old" for a ped. Our FP also delivered 2/3 of the girls.

vaccines are not dealt with by any dr's in town & in the 11 years we've been going to our FP they've only been brought up twice(once by me & once by him). When I asked him about the 1 vaccine a few years ago his response was "I do not believe in unnecessary vaccines".

I'm where you are now--searching for another Dr. I also have toyed with the idea of going to a family Dr instead of Ped this time around. Looking forward to reading the responses you get.

I am making an appointment with a family Dr. because I can't stand our Ped. I wanted a family Dr. so she will know our whole family.

We see a family Dr and she is AWESOME! She knows our family history and is fabulous with kids with special needs. DS2 saw a pediatrician because the neonatologist made us (he was a preemie and has health issues) but I switched him to the family Dr when the pedi left the practice.

Our family Dr is also awesome with not vaxing.. when i told her we don't vaccinate her response was "ok, good!" In 4 years she has never EVER pushed the issue.

I also adore her because she is SOOO understanding, hving had premature twins and 2 special needs kids, she is a great source of support. We spent a good half hour discussing the grieving parents go through when they find out their child has special needs. She has referred them to needed specialists and is extremely proactive in their care.

I also love that even if the appointmant is for someone else I can address issues about any of us at the sme visit and she can help.. its really nice to have the same provider for everyone.

Seriously, I'd look for another family Dr.. there are lots of good, competent ones.

I think the most important part is finding someone you're comfortable with, not so much with their specialty. It can be really hard to find a good fit! We've moved a lot (husband was military), so I've had to do the search several times. The last place we lived, we saw a family practice doctor in a small town an hour away, because I really liked her.

Now we live in a big city, and I pretty much have my pick of doctors/specialists. I take the kids to an awesome pediatrician who has a naturopathic doctor that also works out of the same office, as well as a wonderful nurse practitioner. They also always have medical students in the office shadowing either the doctor or the nurse practitioner, which I really like - it kind of makes me feel like they are on the "cutting edge" of medical treatment. They encourage me to do an alternative vax schedule, and are fine with delaying or just not vaxing (although we do get most or all of them). Really awesome office!

We love our family doctor. She only sees the kids because we don't have insurance, but she is great with them. When I told her we don't vaccinate, she said, "if it were my kid laying there, I wouldn't either." DH asked her last time about a vaccine that is normally only in a combo shot, and if it was available by itself. She told him she appreciated that we were still doing research and keeping an open mind about it all.
She is also very supportive of breastfeeding and delaying solids till six months.
LOVE her!

Either should be fine. Pediatricians do a residency that only deals with babies, children, and adolescents, and family docs do all age groups. If you have a kid with any kind of issue, then you should probably see a Pediatrician, but your family doc might refer you to one anyway. At dh's hospital the family docs have many of the same duties on call that the Peds do, however, they do always have a Pediatrician on back up call in case the family doc isn't comfortable with a kid who is sick. But for routine visits, a family doc, Pediatrician, or nurse practitioner should be fine. Dh can't treat our kids, so we often see the NP at the clinic. I really like her and dh says she does a great job.

yup. I had a physical once & my kids were in the room with me. When he was doing the internal exam one of them coughed. When he came back after I was dressed he wanted to know which one coughed & checked them all out.

Re: family doctor vs pediatrician

Honestly I have only ever had the opposite reaction. DD3 is completely unvax'd (still deciding what I want to do if anything). Every single family practice doc we have seen wants to go on and on about vax's are safe blah blah blah. We just saw a ped yesterday (clinic here finally got one) and she did say "So I see you have been declining vax's." I gave here the same answer I give everytime "We are waiting until at least a year before I will do ANYTHING IF AT ALL." (this is the point the others start talking about the safety of vax's etc). All she said was "OK" and left it at that. We will see as we continue to see her though.
