bunkbeds-at what age?

We are trying to decide on if we want bunkbeds or not.

At what age did you put your LO in the top-bunk? Have they ever fallen out?

Re: bunkbeds-at what age?

Dd was 4 almost 5 when we moved her to the top bunk, she hasn't ever fallen out. When I was a kid I moved to a bunk bed at the same age and fell out a lot, I was a wild sleeper and the rails weren't as good as the newer beds (as far as I remember).

Re: bunkbeds-at what age?

We have debated getting bunk beds for our girls - they are 5 and 4 right now. Haven't been brave enough. My youngest is the wild one and while she would have the bottom bunk at night-time, its the days I am worried about!

We still haven't decided if a space-saving bunk bed is worth the worry or should we just buy two twin beds.......

My cousin put her boys in bunk beds when they were 7 and 2 (well the oldest was 5 when they got the set and he has always slept on the top bunk). They are now 9 and 4 and have never had any issues with falling out of bed at night.

ETA - my youngest has fallen down the ladder easily 4 or 5 times in the past 2 years at their house. Each time she claims she was pushed, but usually she is in the room by herself! Thats the reason for the hesitation on my part for buying bunkbeds for my kids.

Re: bunkbeds-at what age?

We stayed with my in-laws when my older two were 5 and 2 and they were in bunk beds. I think ODD fell off the top once, but those bunk beds didn't have a rail. Now the girls have bunk beds and the younger was 2 when we did that, though she sleeps on the bottom.

I really want bunkbeds too! But I'm worried the boys would play on it, jump off, and hurt themselves. My boys are wild I guess

Kryllen moved to the top bunk at about 3.5. There's a wooden rain bolted in the outside and then I added a high rain on the inside so there is no way for him to fall out unless he's climbing up or down which he never had and we dont use the ladder.

DS got a bunk bed a couple of months after he turned 3, but he sleeps on the bottom bunk. We allow him to play on his top bunk, but only when either DH or I am in the room with him. So far he hasn't ever fallen off the ladder, but that could be different if he slept there and woke up in the middle of the night.

Re: bunkbeds-at what age?

We bought dd's bunk bed when she was three. We only allowed her on the top, with our assistance, to play at first. As part of her 5th birthday "present" she was allowed to sleep on top. She's never fallen out.

Re: bunkbeds-at what age?

We have bunk beds at our vacation home. DS started sleeping in the top bunk at 3.5. The beds have a rail and he has never fallen out. DD climbed up there once this past Dec after we put her to bed, we let her stay up there and she didn't fall out, but at only 2 years old, I think she's a little young.

Yes, I picture monkeys swinging from the top bunk at our house!!

I think we are going to get the kind that we can separate into two beds, so we can have that option if we need it.
