My Mood:
Is this constipation? Or something else...?

My son is 3 mos old, and for the past few weeks I've noticed that he cries really hard for a couple hours before he has a bowel movement, and then he suddenly becomes happy as a clam. When he is crying, he kicks his legs HARD and seems terribly uncomfortable, which gave me the suspicion of constipation - however, when he does go, it isn't hard. In fact, it's pretty (TMI) loose, and that's the part that's throwing me off. He is formula fed, so I know constipation is more common. But can he still be constipated even if his stools aren't hard? Or do you think it's something else?

Hmm...I'm trying to remember back with DD. She had issues with formula and constipation. She pooped little balls mostly so I am not sure that what your describing is constipation. What I am thinking is maybe when he does have to go it is hurting his tummy. So it could still be a formula issue. TMI but I know sometimes when I have to go my tummy starts rolling and it can hurt. What kinda formula is he on right now?

He is on Similac Alimentum (I heard it was the "gentlest" of the formulas so he's been on it for about a month).

Also, he only goes probably every 2 or 3 days...but I guess that's normal for a formula baby?

I don't believe there really is a "normal"..babies are all over the place when it comes to pooing but what you said doesn't sound unusual to me. I was going to suggest maybe Similac Advance Early Shield as it has probiotics in it and can help with digestion. Have you tried that before?

Similac Advanced is very hard on the stomach if there are digestion problems - I would guess it is either that or gas... try Mylicon for gas. What we do as my son needs to poop daily (not necessary according to the docs but our experiences is yours - he needs to or gets fussy then he poops and gets sooo happy)... is to switch up the formula - a bit of the Nestles Gentle works like a charm. I get the 3 oz bottles to carry in the diaper bag and use it when we are out and that seems to work for us - one or two of those and it seems to help... when we go a few days without leaving the house I'll give him some but we notice a difference... just what works for us.
