Re: ~$5 Meal Ideas~

Wow, I'm actually getting on here for the first time even though I registered months ago and I just read all 40 pages of this thread and got alot of REALLY good ideas for my family of 5. I have some pretty picky girls too (ages 8,2 and13 months) and I think they will actually eat this and save me money too!!! Here's my $5 meal:

Chicken Stuffed Shells

Box of Jumbo shells
canned chicken
2 cans of cream of mushroom soup (we use cream of chicken soup)
a can of milk and a can of water
a box of stuffing
chedder cheese

Boil shells as directed. Cook stuffing as directed just add the canned chicken in to cook with it. Draid shells and stuff with stuffing mix. Mix soups, milk and water together and pour over stuffed shells and top with cheese. Cook at 350 for 20 minutes

Re: ~$5 Meal Ideas~

wow tons of cheap ideas here love them all!
we love southern food of course so here are a few we make often

brown your hamburger drain most of the fat off but not all add water to it and pepper and salt to taste add macaronis into it and boil till done,,my kids love this meal and it is so easy!

when we have left overs form this meal we add taco seasoning and some cheese on top for the next night and voila taco hamburger helper but it tastes so much better!

add some onion soup mix to it and sour cream and you have stroganoff or as hubby calls it hobo stroganoff,,LOL

cut up pack of chicken some buttermilk(which can be made by adding al il vinegar tyo you milk in your fridge..or sometimes i use evaporated milk if i have extra cans) flour cornmeal salt n pepper,,,coat and fry the chicken

whip up a quick batch of buttermilk bisquits or corn bread to go with it.
and a veggie of your choice. in the sumemr it is what ever is fresh and ready to pick out the garden!

if you grow you own garden don't forget to can up your vaggies and fruits you want for winter i can can a quart of carrots for the price of about 15cents! which in the store would cost me prolly 3 pluis dollars to get the sddame amoutn of veggie out those lil cans!
if i do have to buy veggies at the store and need to use before they go bad i also can those up,,canned food lasts alot longer than anything in the fridge!

Talking Re: ~$5 Meal Ideas~

I've just discovered this this thread and I'm finding lots of great ideas! We do taco salad which is especially cheap in summer if you grow veggies. Two of my favorite quick and easies, though not sure on exact costs:

tomato, feta sandwiches
-crusty rolls or french bread(good for using slightly stale bread)
-sliced feta (1 pkg makes many sandwiches)
-sliced tomato (free from my garden)
-sliced onion (I prefer red)
-fresh basil (free from the pot in my kitchen window)
-olive oil
Brush bread with oil. Layer ingredients and eat This is my favorite summer sandwich and cheaper than lunch meat.

Shrimp Pasta
-shrimp (I use varying amounts depending on price)
-mushrooms (I use more if I have less shrimp)
-other veggies; I think zucchini would be good but DH wouldn't eat
-cream of mushroom soup
-milk
-sour cream
-boiled pasta
saute shrimp, shrooms and any other veggies in a little butter and garlic. Mix condensed soup with 1/2 can milk and about 8 oz sour cream. Stir into shrimp mixture and heat. Toss with cooked pasta- I use farfalle. This recipe makes it easy to stretch shrimp but it's still very tasty. We serve this with salad and garlic toast, which is a good way to use up leftover hamburger buns or stale bread..

Re: ~$5 Meal Ideas~

Favorite yummy dinner! This is probably close to $5 if you get local ingredients from the farmer's market

1 French loaf
1 can of black beans
1/2 onion
1 clove of garlic chopped
1/2 head of romaine lettuce
half of jar of salsa
2 cup cheddar cheese
chopped up green olives (1/2 jar)

Cut loaf in half length wise, put in a 200 F degree oven for 10 minutes. While bread is toasting, add oil or butter to skillet, add chopped onion and garlic to pan and while onion and garlic are cooking add drained black beans to skillet and heat through. (for added spice add chili power or red pepper flakes or both). Pull out bread from oven and hollow out to make boats & cut boats in half. After beans are heated through spread beans on the boats, spread salsa over beans and cover with cheese. Bump temp of oven to 400 and put boats on baking sheet & keep in there until cheese is melted. While boats are in the oven, chop romaine and olives up. When cheese is melted, add some more salsa and top with lettuce and olives and you're done! I call them black bean pizza boats. They are super yummy!
