tips for getting toddler to stay in bed

DH and I have about had it. We've had DD in her toddler bed now for about 3 weeks. First night was hell, then things got better and we had a glimer of hope, but now she has regressed again.

It takes us FOREVER to get her to stay in bed at night. I dont even know how many times we put her back to bed last night. She'll stay for a while, and just when we think she is asleep, she gets up and comes to her door, or comes into our room (if we're already in bed). Then, she has been waking up in the middle of the night (wanting to eat???), and we have to start the whole process over again. And to top it off, she is now waking up at 6 or earlier, when she used to sleep from 8:30-7:30.

She is a cranky cranky pants all day long, because she is not getting enough sleep at night. DH and I are exhausted because we keep getting woken up.

Any tips/tricks to get DC to stay in their bed/room? So far we've avoided locking her in her room, because for some reason that just seems wrong to me, but i'm starting to seriously consider it. What else can we try?

My son goes to bed just fine but within 3 or 4 hours he is up and comes into my room. I just lift the covers and let him climb into bed with me in order for both of us to get some sleep.

We used a gate in the door, which seems to help.

Patience. Its not a quick fix. Keep taking her to bed. Be emotionless and say its time for night night. Be consitent with your routine so she knows what to expect

We use a baby gate too and leave the door open. DS moved to a twin bed at 18 months and he is not to be trusted with roaming the house. I let him nap without a gate and he just comes out when he is ready but at night he stays put in his room.

Yup we put up a baby gate in his doorway and keep the door open.

Re: tips for getting toddler to stay in bed

We've always gone from co-sleeping in mom/dad's bed directy to a double futon. I lie with them until they fall asleep at night and go to them when they wake. I wouldn't like a toddler bed because it's too small for 2. Neither have ever left their room.

I would put a gate up. Or you could "super nanny" style, just keep putting back to bed, no engaging them in any way. I have a great sleeper with my two year old and she has been on a twin day bed since right at one year old. I put her back in bed as many times as it takes. No food, no entertaining, no exceptions on the rules ever (unless she is horribly sick). Eventually they will give up. It is just a matter of you have more patience to keep going.

baby gate... my son spent many nights sleeping on the floor but he eventually figured out that the bed is softer than the floor and was sleeping in his toddler bed every night/nap by 18 months... we'll be moving my daughter into one by the end of the month
