Re: BC mamas can dh take parental leave?

yup, he can take 35 weeks. My hubby and I are both now off. He is off for our adopted son and I am off for our soon to be newest edition. (I know it is a different situation, but we both looked into it a fair amount).

Yep, I do believe he can. I was told that we could both take 17 weeks and stay home for parental leave or split it up or use it however we wanted

Yes either parent can take the 35 weeks leave, its parental not maternal. The mom is the only one who can take the 15 or so week portion.

Remember that the Parental benefit is only 55% of your husbands pay up to a maximum of I think $400 a week.

I know for us as a one income family we could not live for 35 weeks with our income cut by 45%.

Just something to keep in mind.

I believe the max in BC is much higher. I was getting about 630$/wk and I was no where near the max.

Hmm - I wonder if they've changed that. I had #2 in February 2008 and was maxed out at $430ish/week.

My husband is gearing up to start his parental leave soon. I haven't been working so he can take the full 35 weeks. Our situation is a bit different because we have an at-home income that is 2.5 times his take-home pay for his day job, so we'll have cutbacks but still be very comfortable. And he's only taking 4 months.

Perhaps you are thinking that you got $630 each cheque in which case your benefit would have been $315 per week

The maximum benefit is $413 per week and the amount is the same Canada wide. There are exceptions but the maximum isn't much more than the stated max.

Employment Insurance: Maternity Benefits

EI maternity benefits are payable to the natural mother in the period surrounding the birth of a child, and may start from eight weeks before the expected date of birth to the week of actual delivery. Fifteen (15) weeks of maternity benefits are allowed after a two-week waiting period and can be collected within 17 weeks of the actual week of confinement or week of expected confinement, whichever is later. However, the 17-week limit can be extended and payments delayed for every week a baby is confined to the hospital, for up to 52 weeks following the week of the child's birth. It may also be possible to receive sickness benefits in addition to the maximum weeks of maternity benefits should an employee be unable to work because of complications due to pregnancy or childbirth or by reason of an unrelated illness.

Benefits usually cover 55% of a claimant’s weekly insurable earnings, to a maximum of $413 per week. There are nonetheless exceptions: claimants who are in a low-income family with a net annual income of less than $25,921 and who are receiving the Child Tax Benefit (CTB) can receive a higher benefit rate (family supplement).8

To be eligible, an employee must have worked a minimum of 700 hours in the previous 52 weeks or since the start of her last claim. It should be noted that EI legislation has been amended and that requirements will be reduced to 600 hours as of December 31, 2000. Further changes include the possibility of retaining some work attachment while receiving benefits, thereby allowing parents to earn the greater of $50 or 25% of their weekly benefits, without penalty.

Supplemental insurance benefits for employees on a maternity (or parental) leave provided by employers do not affect EI benefits, as long as the combined income of the benefit and supplement do not exceed 100% of an employee’s normal weekly salary.9
The parameters for payment of parental benefits is the same as maternity, the only difference being that either parent can use the parental leave portion of the benefit.

Yeah that was it. I couldn't remember the exact amount because I never actually got that, I got the after-tax amount. (granted, I don't remember the after-tax amount either!)
