Question How do I know if a sweater is wool?

How do I know if a sweater is made out of wool?
Will it say "wool"?
I have a few sweaters I never wear that could be made into longies and was wondering but most of them say "Acrylic". Is that wool?

Some of them have the tags cut out, is there another way to tell. ( I know nothing about fabric. lol )

Thanks!

It will say wool, there is a burn test that you can do if you don't know the fabric content but I don't know how.

Acrylic is not wool.....it is a synthetic (plastic) fiber.

If it's wool, the tag will say wool, laine (french for wool), lambswool, etc.

If there's no tag....there are two tests you can do.

Bleach test: A small piece of wool yarn will thoroughly disolve in bleach after about 5 minutes. Acrylic will just sit there.

Burn test: If you light a small piece of wool yarn, it will burn itself out (not burn). There will also be the scent of burning hair. Acrylic, on the other hand will incinerate almost imediately, very quickly, with a strong flame, terrible odor and leave you with a small sticky/crusty ball of blackened goop.

You can make longies out of acrylic too! You just wash and dry if they get soiled instead of treating them like wool..They are not *natural* and do not *clean* themselves like wool but i think I actually like acrylic longies better :-)

Be careful doing the burn test..I had a sweater that *burned itself out* so I was sure it was wool...Turns out AFTER making two pairs of ever so cute longies that wicked like crazy I discovered it wasn't wool!

First you look closely and see if it is fuzzy. Acrylic is usually not fuzzy.

Wool has lots of stretch, but acrylic doesn't stretch.

If you get wool wet, it has a wool smell as well.

One more thing, if you wash it on a hot wash with cold rinse and it shrinks - its wool

Yes, you can also make longies out of acrylic sweaters. They work like fleece pants.

So would you have to wash them every day?
