What decongestant can I take???

Hey mamas... I have whatever awful virus has been going around. I normally DO NOT take meds at all, but this is nasty and I'm desperate! (Taking care of 2 kids is not happening very well right now! ) Mama needs some help! What (if any) decongestants are safe while BFing? My head feels like it's 100 lbs and is going to explode!

I don't think it's so much that the decongestants are unsafe for baby (transfer in milk, etc.) but that they actually make you dry up (that's what they're for!) Have you checked kellymom.com? They have some good info. Also, try steaming (if you get a moment)...close the door to the bathroom and put the shower on hot hot--it really helps. I had a bad cold while bfing and that was the only thing that I did and it helped a lot!
Sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks mama, I will dry that & check out the site. I have mama milk tea that makes my milk supply BOOM. I wonder if drinking this while on a decongestant would help me not to dry up?

Re: What decongestant can I take???

Taking a decongestant can definitely hit your milk supply BUT just a dose or two probably won't have much affect. You may notice a drop for the several hours immediately following the medication (probably 4-6) but it should come back up on it's own. You just don't want to take it regularly or even more than a dose a day.

Ditto! I had an awful cold and took one dose daily, I did not notice a supply drop.

Feel better soon

Re: What decongestant can I take???

Another thing I've found that helps my sinuses to drain is thick crust pizza. There are other things that would work, but basically its hot so you get some of the benefits similar to steaming with liquifing the gunk and then also it's chewy so you are moving your face around to help get things started moving once they liquify a bit.

However, I've taken Benedryl (sp?) without any ill effects. Dr. Hale only cautions to watch for excessive sleepyness in infants under 3 months. In fact, I had megadoses of Benedryl in the hospital after an alergic reaction when my LO was somewhere around a year old and we're still nursing at 32 months.

Feel better,
Amy

Sudafed is safe and it generally won't affect your milk supply if you take it in moderation.
