Vancouver Island is beautiful. Your shopping options will really vary depending where on VI you end up. Outlet shopping exists, but mostly on the Mainland. (They are not rearly as great as south of the border). If you end up in a small town, you will be heading to Victoria or Nanaimo to shop. There are a few great diaper shops over there too! There are french immersion schools in almost every district, and are a pretty good option.

As far as winter clothes go, it really doesn't get that cold, but a good pair of boots a warm coat and a pair of mittens never hurt! Our kids' snowsuits went unused this year!

PS - Smarties are a candy!?!
There is a great website for real - estate called mls.ca

VI is great! I`m a ferry ride away from Courtenay (you`ll need to get used to ferries lol).

You won`t find a lot of bargain shopping "on the island" (get used to that phrase lol), but you will in the lower mainland (ferry from Nanaimo). For cd shops, my recommendations are Jamtots in Victoria, Huckleberry Baby Shop in Nanaimo, and Podlings in Courtenay.

Nah, it doesn`t get very cold, but you will learn to love gortex and polar fleece lol. Our winters are rainy, plus a week-ish of snow per year.

We do have in Canada what Americans call Smarties. We know them as Rockets. (and if you look on the American smarties wrapper, it says Made in Canada )

Canadian Smarties are like regular M&Ms. And our iced tea is always sweetened.

You might be disappointed to find there isn't Target or TJ Maxx or many of the other big US chains. But on the whole, Canada is beautiful and the people are friendly

HMM... no Target?? That sucks big time! Target is my mother ship. I'll get over it though. Maybe I'll start a play group once I get settled and meet some of diaperswapper moms in person thanks for all the replies.. oh and I'm going to google canadian history so I don't feel like a fish out of water when I move.

Here are some other Canadian chat forums for moms:

Re: joing y'all soon

I would say go ahead and stock up on clothes there. My mom always goes to the States and comes back with a suitcase full of clothes for the grandkids. I don't know from personal experience, but I think our prices are higher here on a lot of things Unless that's just because I'm up north!! Good luck! I'm sure you'll love it here.

Smarties in the US are what we call Rockets... the little rolls of pastel coloured sugar candies, wrapped in celophane with the red ink on the twisted ends.
