how to fit many kids in small houses comfortably *pics*

First off this room is a mess and needs vaccuming, but I've seen alot of posts lately about alot of people downsizing thier homes or are expecting and cannot "upgrade" thier current home atm, so i figured i'd snap a pic anyway. We have a family of 6 plus a furbaby in a 960 sq ft trailer.

This is just the older 3's bedroom, if you want pics opf the rest of the house lmk. They are still young and don't need alot of space or personal things. they also all play with the same toys and dress up clothes. Ages are 6,4 and 2. The 4 YO has the top bunk, the 6 yo the bottom bunk and the 2 yo the toddler bed (this is actually a very old bunkbed set my mom got at a yard sale this summer. This is the top bunk as the bottom bunk is also a trundle) DH also modified the older girls bunk bed to fit thier room and after breaking the "safety rail" he put on all new custom solid pine ones that didn't just slide on and off but are screwed in with carpenter screws.

Thier dresser is in my sewing room which is totally fine with me because 2 yo's have a habit of throwing clothes all over the place.

They seem totally comfortable with the amount of play space they have and take a "club house" type of perspective when talking about thier room.

I just told your stats to my DH and his reply "I would say that's crazy but that is how the rest of the world lives"
We are so spoiled here with everyone "needing" there own space. I don't think kids mind at all, there personal space is obviously different than ours, they are always wantng to be held or hang on us (:

Re: how to fit many kids in small houses comfortably *pics*

We moved out of our trailer the same week I found out I was pregnant with #4. Our house is a lot bigger (but old, lol), we have 3 nice sized bedrooms but all four of my kids still share a room because they want to. We have a almost 10 yr old girl and the 3 yr old girl in a double bed and the 8 yr old girl on top bunk, 6 yr old boy on bottom bunk. They have no toys in their room since we have a family room. The boy is going to be moving to his own room soon since the girls are getting older. I'm not sure how they're going to take that. lol

I think too much room is unnecessary. It's nice to have a place for the kids to run around. We had a coffee table in our living room and when we took it out for the carpet cleaners to come, well... The kids loved it, so we never brought it back up from the basement. Now, I can see a "living room" down there so I'm contemplating it.. It's where my sewing stuff is for now and the basement is level with the outside, so I could sew while the kids are in the back yard playing or they can play in the "living room"

Anyways, we have a 3 BR and the main floor's kinda small, IMO. But, it works for now. We are trying to go through and get rid of things we don't need. If I had all girls I'd have all 3 in 1 bedroom and use the other as a play room.

We've got 2 girls (2 and almost 5) and one boy (18 mos) and one on the way. Once baby comes, she'll be sleeping with us until she sleeps through the night. Then we might have little cubicles (like those plastic drawer things) for each girl, and they can put their "personal" items in there so no one can touch them. And perhaps make the boy's room also the play room. And just get a few toys out for when he's napping and the girls are up. IDK how it will work yet, but hopefully we can combine all or most toys into one room. I feel like a mad lady with toys in the living room, his room, and girl's room, all needing cleaned up

Oh, and the kids' rooms aren't all that big, I guess they're not real small either. Our room is very decent size though but our King size bed takes up a lot of space.

I love it. I only used two bedrooms in my old house, even though there were three, because my kids all wanted to be together. Now, we still only use two bedrooms! When we moved in here, the older kids all migrated to the living room to sleep *no idea why* and the two babies co-sleep. Bedrooms are just storage lol.

I don't know how big our duplex is. Maybe 1000 sq of living space? MAYBE. The 3rd bedroom is actually converted, it use to be the garage.

We also have a bunk bed and a crib in one room (the boys room) - no other furniture. If we still live here when the boys are older and they need a desk or something, the bunk bed has a trundle and we can sleep all three kids in the bunk bed (one on top, one on bottom, one on the trundle). We use plastic drawers and such in the closet for that room.

My daughter has the 3rd bedroom (garage convert), which doesn't have a closet but has some shelving. We use the plastic drawers in there too, although she could actually fit a dresser in there (I think we'll buy an armoire at some point).

Our bedroom fits our bed, two nightstands, and dresser, and I organize our closet so that it fits my dh's stuff and my stuff on one side, with (2) 3-drawer plastic drawers on the closet floor with all the baby's stuff in it. Then on the other side of the closet is a 4 tier steralite shelf with bins for all the craft and homeschooling stuff. Up top there is room for stored items.

Our living room we made space by mounting the television on the wall. We also only have a couch and a chair (although we'd REALLY like a couch and loveseat, but no $$ for that right now - even though our couch just broke AGAIN)... no ottomans or coffee tables.

I still think we have too much JUNK. It's easy to think you NEED things, when in reality they just clutter up the house and frustrate you! I'd like to go through the house again (I just did a few months ago) and get rid of more... LOL And while more living space seems nice, it also means I'd have more to CLEAN -- ugh.

We save a little space in the eating area (which is an extension of the kitchen), by using a restaurant style high chair, and if another baby ever makes its way here then we'll just get another - they'll stack, unlike traditional high chairs (not to mention they're CHEAP).

I'm reading it now. It's neat.

We are 5 in a three bedroom house...1100 sqft.....however we have a fully finished basement. My sewing room is down there, other than that it's just used for storage.

right now the big kids have their own rooms but the boys will share once the baby is out of our room. Bedrooms are all small...kids rooms are 8x10 or less, our room is 12x12 or so. Not much space but it works for us and it's almost paid for.
