Can DD sleep w/ a normal pillow?

DD is 19 mos. and has a bad cold/cough. She changes all over the place at night, so I can't elevate one side of the crib very easily. I let her sleep with a pillow last night, and it seemed to help her coughing & congestion (and she didn't turn 180 like she usually does.

Is this too young?? Not safe? Most things I've read say wait 'till 2 years (and, of course, my mother says from birth ). When did you (or did you ever) start letting your LO sleep with a pillow?

Re: Can DD sleep w/ a normal pillow?

my dd just turned 20 months and she's had a pillow in her bed for a while although she doesn't use it since she tosses and turns ALOT. But I also let my los sleep on their belly and with blankets but I honestly don't see what's unsafe about a toddler sleeping with a pillow. I would just use your gut feeling on what you think is best

My girls did waaaay before then. I think right around a year. Pillows are lightweight--even if she did end up underneath it there wouldn't be a problem. I'm not a big worrier about that kind of thing though-- tiny baby, yes, but strong, normally developed toddler? I just don't see what harm could come of that. DS is 6 months and shares my pillow with me at night though, which I'm sure is a big no-no, so maybe I'm not the best person to ask.

We gave DD a travel size pillow when she was around a year old, then she got a full size pillow when she was around 18 months. She's always done fine with it. DS (4) hates pillows and although he has a couple on his bed, he prefers to sleep flat on the mattress.

Re: Can DD sleep w/ a normal pillow?

Our friends brought a cute one for their DS when he stayed the day (to nap as well)
I think he was about 15 mos. It was from IKEA. it was perfect size for him.
However when DD is sick I put a towel under her mattress to elevate. Depends on how elevated u want them - as to how thick to fold it.
DD moved all around so sometimes this defeated the purpose...

i would just make sure it is a flat type pillow. go gradually.

We started a pillow at about 18 months for DS1 (when he moved to his crib)

Thanks mamas, good to know others use them, too! It was great having it in there last night, she didn't wake up once because her nose was stuffy! Right now it's graduating to pillows, next thing I know it'll be training bras & car keys, they grow up so fast

Re: Can DD sleep w/ a normal pillow?

I started transitioning Noah into his own bed around 18 months or so, and he slept with a pillow when I did.

And even before that, when we were co-sleeping, I'd often wake up to find that he scooted up and was sleeping on a pillow. I think if they are THAT mobile, then a pillow is fine.

God bless!

I gave R one at about 17 months when she had a bad cold. I used a flatter (used) pillow and she loves it! When I need to wake her in the morning, she is under it! Head & legs out - it is so funny!
