Sewing for a good cause!

Hey all,
I have been bitten by the charity sewing bug lately. I love fabric and I love to sew but not necessarily just for myself. Just wanted to let you crafty mamas know about a few groups I have contacted recently that need diapers, mama cloth, pillowcase dresses, aprons...... I am not affiliated with any of them but am sewing for them and they are active and responding to emails.

http://haitirescuecenter.wordpress.c...ewing-projects

--ongoing need for diapers, aprons, pillowcase dresses.....

http://http://www.homeboundmissions....d=54&Itemid=73

--always needing diapers, not picky about pattern (prefold or fitted), pinnable/tieable are good options

http://www.sishope.org

--collecting handmade mama cloth, with or without PUL, website has preferred pattern

http://www.projectthrive.org

--collecting handmade mama cloth (with PUL) and related supplies, contact Project Thrive for pattern and instructions (Celeste is sweet!)

These groups seem like a great way for us crafty mamas to do what we love in service to others. Happy sewing!

Here's another one, though I haven't contacted them personally. Their website has active updates and a pattern for the pillowcase dresses.

This is the same one as one of the above, maybe you put the wrong one, or just didn't realize that it was the same site...but that's awesome you are doing this! I may even do something for them, or "hand me down" some things that my ds has grown out of, or ones we really didn't use.

Re: Sewing for a good cause!

Thank you so much for adding these links. I have been planning to get a group of sewers/knitters/crocheters together and was thinking of Bundles of Love here in Minnesota. A friend of mine volunteered for them assembling care packages and loved it. I'll have to check all of them out to find the right fit for our group.

I'm intrested in helping out also, although I see haiti loves to tie their diapers. How do you put the tie on and where??

I think ties are a good idea since some places might use pins and others might not. I haven't found a pattern that incorporates ties so what I'm doing is taking one of my diaper patterns and shortening the back wings just a little bit (saves on fabric). If I use elastic in the back of the diaper then I will attach the ties to the wings, probably closer to the back of the diaper because if I attach them to the end of the wing then it might not work on a smaller baby very well. Just be sure to stitch them down well so they won't pull off easily. Maybe do two ties, like in the Haiti Rescue Center picture,? I don't know if the babies will always wear covers (just not sure) so the two ties would be extra assurance that the diaper will stay on. If the diaper does not have elastic in the back then I will just sew two ties all the way across the back like in the picture. HTH

Yes, I checked out Bundles of Love and I may make some diaper bags for them when I have heavier fabric. They look fun and easy and they probably don't receive enough of them. I wish I could knit or crochet well but then I'd have a closet full of yarn in addition to fabric! LOL I know your group will find a worthy cause to apply your multitude of skills. I am just so pleased to have found some organizations that can benefit from my love of sewing. Happy stitching!
