Re: How accurate are baby weight estimates?

my ultrasound at 35 weeks said 5 pounds 11 oz...he was born at 37+1 at 6 pounds 1&1/2oz. So in my experience, no not reliable.

Re: How accurate are baby weight estimates?

With my DS they estimated 8.5 pounds and he wound up being 9 pounds 3 ounces.

Re: How accurate are baby weight estimates?

They estimated close to 8 pounds with DS, and he was 6lbs, 12oz. So, inaccurate for me...

Re: How accurate are baby weight estimates?

They can be off by two pounds in either direction. This is why I cringe everytime I hear of someone being induced because of a big baby. They induced and eventually sectioned my frined because she is very short and they her doctor was sure her baby was between 9 and 10lbs. Her son was 7lbs 2 ozs at birth and she was traumatized and angry about the entire process that lead up to here emergency c/s.

Re: How accurate are baby weight estimates?

Yeah my dr said it can go a pound over or under so either your LO is 7.13 or 9.13. I would think 7 lbs 13 oz sounds more accurate though. I had one done at 36 weeks and they said my son was 7 lbs 11 oz and then i had him 2 weeks later and he was 8 lbs 5 oz. So it was pretty close. But i have a friend who went 2 weeks past her due date, when they measured her son they said he was 6 lbs 11 oz and he turned out 9.12!!!!!!!! So i guess you never know.

Re: How accurate are baby weight estimates?

Everyone is correct..... I do ultrasounds and they can be off a pound or more either way. The reason is trying to accurately measure a baby that's all curled up and twisted in there. Hard to get a good measurement of the head when it's wedged in the pelvis. The abdomen measurement well...... take your measurement while curled in a ball then do it standing up. The older the baby, the harder the bones = more shadowing and more issues imaging..... it's all an estimate. The farther along, the harder to see.... that's why the preferred time for the diagnostc U/S is around 20weeks..... everything is there and visible, but the bones haven't gotten too ossified and the baby is not too cramped yet. Don't fret mama..... they are often wrong with weight estimates : )
