Please help me make prefolds
I want some prefolds for DD, but I can't decide exactly what to get so I want to try to make my own. I want a really soft, absorbent fabric, like maybe bamboo. Where can I get bamboo fabric? Is there another fabric that would be nice and would stay soft? Thanks for the help!

I think Bamboo is a good choice. Find Mama Marsh on here. She's got a coop and her prices for Bamboo is the best. Her coop name on yahoo is WAHMChatter...I'd look it up. The material that is normally used to make prefolds is diaper twill and that can get annoying to use. |

Re: Please help me make prefolds
Cotton jersey will stay soft, and can be found locally. I do like bamboo but it can be 4 or 5 times the cost of cotton.

Re: Please help me make prefolds
Sounds right, its your basic tee shirt material. I think I would do 3x5x3 depending on thickness. You could always do flannel for the center pad layer with jersey on the outside.
Of course a trip to a yard sale or thrift store to get some tees and a flannel sheet cheep is not a bad place to start. ETA – Jersey is a fabric weave, it is a knit. Cotton is the most common but you can have lots of types of Jersey (bamboo, hemp and synthetics) so check the content.

Re: Please help me make prefolds
I got approved to join her group, and she is placing an order this week. She has bamboo fleece, bamboo velour and heavy fleece, what is the difference?
She also has cotton velour coming soon.

The velour is a silky feeling fabric, Very popular for inside layers of diapers. doesn't have a stay dry feeling thou to in. regular fleece is very popular also for diapers and if used fuzzy side up has a stay dry ablity, the heavy fleece i have never used personally, but it is thicker than the regular fleece. (also either fleeces are great for soakers too

Re: Please help me make prefolds
Thank you! So what would you recommend for prefolds? I put 2 yrs of each type of bamboo on your database. I would like to make 12 prefolds. Is 4 yards enough? She is 13 months with a 16 inch rise.

Re: Please help me make prefolds
You have to figure how many layers you want and how big your prefolds will be to do your yardage. You also need to know how much bamboo will shrink, hemp shrinks about 20% of its length but I suspect the bamboo is less.
If you are doing your prefolds 17x15 you can get 2 per yard out of 60” fabric, not including the extra layers in the center.
