When do you replace a bike helmet?

Ds crashed his bike today!
He basically kept going at the end of a little boardwalk instead of stopping, and went right down the wooden stairs! I was a little ways back from him (my mom's friends teenage son was RIGHT next to him but couldnt grab him fast enough), and all I saw was his feet up in the air He landed with his head somehow between the wood steps.

He was actually totally fine, checked him out and he only cried because he was scared. He has a bruised up chest and a scratch but was playing on the beach 5min later.

So do we need to replace his helmet? The one he has is a Bell, the cheap kind from walmart, and is actually a little big on him b/c I couldnt find one that fit right (either too small or a little big were my choices). The helmet looks fine other than scuff marks on the top and a tiny dent in the foam on the side.

I would err on the side of caution and replace it.

Re: When do you replace a bike helmet?

It did its job, protecting his head from injury, I would replace for sure.

They recommend replacing the helmet just like you replace a car seat in an accident. Even thought there may not be any visible cracks manufacturers just don't know the effects that the crash had on the foam and structure. Don't be afraid to replace it.

I would replace a carseat in any sort of crash, even minor, so it makes sense that I should replace his helmet!

Thanks!
