First Foods - Veggies vs. Grains

Anyone out there schooled in the thought that veggies make a better first food than rice/oat/barley?

A few people who's opinion I respect have suggested veggies first, but I don't know much about this. Obviously the 'mainstream' is to start with the grains.

Can you tell me what you chose, and why?

Thanks, Mamas!

I started with homemade rice cereal mixed with breastmilk. I figured that rice had the fewest allergens involved. After rice I moved her to veggies-- I made all my own babyfood because it was easier and cheaper.

We started with rice cereal, mainly because that is what we've always done

we started with rice cerial (home made) and quickly moved to veggies and fruits. Now, at 13 months, Dakota prefers to feed himself finger type foods, such as apples, bananas, carrots, green beans, etc.

Of course, we didnt start solids very early... hes only reciently been eating solids.

Well, we started w/ avocado, bananas & sweet potato (not at the same time, LOL!). Rice cereal really has very little nutrition in it - read the side of the box... The theory is that rice is one of the least allergenic foods, but unless you have a heavily-allergy prone family, it's probably not a concern, IMO. Avocado has awesome fats needed for brain development, lots of calories for growing bodies and most babies love the taste (Claire used to eat an entire avo for dinner when she was about 9-10 months old).

we tryed rice once, he got constipated, then i did research, and its not necessary, and it is actually harmful to introduce grains to early because they dont have the digestive enzymes to deal with them

so we did fruits and veges after that.

Re: First Foods - Veggies vs. Grains

Well, I always started with rice cereal cuz the books/docs/experts always said to start with that. It does cause the fewest allergies, however, it is constipating and personally I don't think most babies even like it-it has very little nutritional value, I usually end up stopping the cereal as soon as veggies are started just b/c most of the babies don't like it anyway. If I were to start a baby on solids, I personally would start with veggies and skip the cereal.

We started w/ spoonfuls of BM/rice cereal mixture that was almost all BM because I was having a hard time letting go of our EBF relationship.
After DD accepted that, I went right to avocado in a mesh feeder. She loved it (after gagging and making 100 diff. faces, of course.)

We started w/rice cereal w/Dom. I'm not sure what we'll do with the girls first.
Have you tried the boxed rice cereal?! It's nasty, LOL. Anyone have a recipe for rice cereal? LOL, I'm not particularly cooking inclined.

Re: First Foods - Veggies vs. Grains

I started with rice cereal...my DD was weird and LOVED it. I would mix it with BM and she would gobble it up and still want more. Then I did introduce applesauce before veggies, but when she was on purureed baby food, she preferred green beans and peas???!!! to fruit.

But now, she will not eat veggies and could eat fruit for every meal???!
