Re: Karo syrup in every bottle?

I can't imagine that Karo corn syrup could have enough benefit that it would outweigh the damage done to the immune system of anybody, but in particular a seven week old baby. Sugar & corn syrup, in large part because of how refined they are, are like poison to the immune system. I would think a baby that had been switched to formula AND was getting that much sugar would be having some major difficulties! Also if she's been putting the corn syrup into every bottle for a month, it clearly is NOT working for the constipation so she needs to stop it.

She could try gripe water... or goat's milk instead of formula. Goat's milk can be a good substitute for human milk for people who have nursing difficulties.

I dont like the idea of Karo either but just so everyone understands it is corn syrup which btw is one of the main ingredients in formula. Every bottle seams excessive. My neice had to have a few bottles of it until they put her on soy or lactos free formula.

Oh, another thing I thought of is to maybe have her look for a formula without added iron - that is a big culprit in newborn constipation. She may also want to look in to using infant probiotics, those have worked wonders for my son!

I would suggest a lower iron formula. Thats what we used with DD, we didnt have any poop problems but she really did not like the regular formulas. It wasnt until we switched to lower iron that she was nice and content.

That said, some babies (and adults) just dont poop every day. However, if its been longer than three days I think I would take baby to the dr.

I agree about the corn syrup not being good for a tiny babies body, or any body for that matter. And the majority of formula is made with corn syrup solids. I encouraged her to see the ped and if she needed to try something to try prune juice. And I will tell her about the iron. Thanks!

My babies were both constipated even with bm and my doctor said to use mineral oil. Just once a day though and like a tsp of it.

Re: Karo syrup in every bottle?

The majority of formula is NOT made with corn syrup- usually only the low or no-lactose and soy versions do. They use it as the carb since they (obviously) cannot use lactose (which is a sugar too) as the carb.

The regular old milk based formulas like Similac Advanced, Enfamil Premium, Similac Organic, Baby's Only, etc don't have corn syrup.

My concern about Karo is that nowadays it contains corn syrup AND high fructose corn syrup. I would never feed a baby HFCS!

Diapers.com sells a low iron formula.
