9 mo old with congestion HELP!!!

My LO (mostly BF still) is all congested. Runny nose, coughing, sneezing. When she feeds she can't breathe. I feel awful for her. What can I do?

Awww! Poor thing! I hope your lo feels better soon!

Cool mist humidifier for when she's sleeping. Before feeding her put saline drops in her nose and use a nasal aspirator to clean out as much as you can. They do have baby Vicks for infants 6 months and up and that works very well.

Re: 9 mo old with congestion HELP!!!

Thanks, its beena LONG week. Monday night she had a fever of 103.9 nd was throwing up. Doctor couldn't find anything wrong. By Thursday she was acting completely normal. Now last night she's come to with a cough, spitting up mucus, and congestion. I feel awful for her. And boy am I getting tired!

Is Vick's OK for babies? I thought I rememberhearing something about it being too strong...but I'm not sure.

Re: 9 mo old with congestion HELP!!!

You can put a little bit of Vicks on the bottom of her feet. Also, try cutting out the dairy in your diet. I am not positive it would make a difference for a BF baby, but dairy is a mucous producer. If she sleeps in her own space, put a pillow under her mattress to incline it a bit.

Yep, baby vicks. DS asks me for this when he has a stuffy nose, so I think it does work at least a little bit. What I think really works though is saline nasal spray with the nasal aspirator. DS hates it (um who wouldn't) but SO much more comes out and he sounds a lot better afterwards.

Re: 9 mo old with congestion HELP!!!

DD was recently hospitalized, one of the things that was wrong was she was extremely conjested. They prescribed pediatric ozonol but also gave me some saline drops to take home. A few drops in each nostril for a few days and she was much better. It helped to loosen things up and I got a ton of stuff when I used the aspirator (snot sucker as I call it, lol)

This might sound really weird- but it worked for ds. Take a little breast milk and put it up his nose... it is about the safest thing you can put up his nose. I also second the vicks on the feet and then put socks on over it.

Re: 9 mo old with congestion HELP!!!

My DD had RSV when she was a week old. Dr. suggested putting her in a hot shower with me for 10 or 15 minutes. I just held her and kept her out of the direct spray so she got the steam without getting in the hot water. That helped a lot. And agree with PPs - saline drops and aspirating often. I often did it right after the shower treatment and got tons more mucus out.
Hope she's feeling better soon

How's your lo doing, any relief yet?

And, yes Baby Vicks is fine, it's made for babies 6 months and up.

Re: 9 mo old with congestion HELP!!!

Well my husband couldn't find baby vicks last night at the store, but I got some today. I've been using the humidifier and I put a touch of adult vicks on her feet. She improved today over yesterday, but last night was ROUGH. She kept stirring, and I'd nurse her to calm her down and she'd fall asleep. But she was angled at that point. When I'd try to lay her flat (in our bed, we cosleep) she'd wake immediately. I fell asleep sitting up in bed a few times, trying to get her to stay calm!

I am of the opinion that suctioning her nose is a practiced art..I am no good at it! I'm going to try the breastmilk trick next time we feed.

Thank you for all of your help, you're great!
