Unconditional Parenting

I seriously LOVE this book. Everything about it just clicked with me and it all seems to make perfect sense when you take the time to think about it. But to practice it means to literally have little to no support since it is so different from what everyone else seems to be doing.

Have you read this book (Unconditional Parenting by Alfie Kohn)? Did you love it? What is your favorite parenting book?

Alfie Cohen is a great author! If you like that book the book "Nurture Shock" by Po Bronson and Ashley Merriman will also get you thinking not only about parenting, but the education system (this is coming from a teacher too).

It's about parenting without punishment AND without rewards, so no "good job" and no time-outs. But really it's about so much more than that. I don't think I can give the book justice in a quick summary, so let me think about it and come back.

Thanks for the recommendation! I just added this book to my queue at the library so I hope to be reading it soon.

I read it and loved it. DH is reading it and loving it as much as I did. We plan on doing our utmost to move to this parenting philosophy (I have nearly 7 years of bad parenting habits to break, 5 for DH who is not my ODS's dad). I'll be your support!!! Maybe we can keep an active thread (or thread series) for support here?

For those curious about the book, as the OP said it's nearly impossible to summarize. However this youtube vid gives a really good glimpse into the ideas of the guy that wrote it and is what made me want to read the book.

Re: Unconditional Parenting

i haven't read the book but i've read some of this excerpts and i think it makes sense. kids should genuinely want to be good - not be good for rewards, and kids should genuinely want to be not bad - not because they don't want to get punished.

i wanted to pick up the book and completely escaped my mind. i think i'll go get it today.
