Gestational diabetes?
I got a call from my OB today. The nurse said that while my labs and blood work are all normal, my glucose is slightly high. She said that when the BMI is over a certain number, they run an additional blood sugar test. When it's over 4.8, they require a 3 hour glucose test. Mine was 5.6, so I'm going tomorrow morning. She said that if it is gestational diabetes, it's really good if caught early, rather than during the middle of pregnancy. It's more controllable.

Re: Gestational diabetes?
I was GD with my DS... it was actually really good for me as it really kept me on healthy foods and I maintained my weight from 20weeks on. (I gained 15lbs the first trimester) My mom is diabetic since she was 7 and I have a whole new appreciation for what she goes through. I went to a special class to teach me how to eat (it's a bit of a different ball game when preggo because of the hormones) but in the end it was me figuring out what my doby needed. PM me if you want more info. I learned so much from my experience about healthy eating habits

Re: Gestational diabetes?
wow... I can't believe they will test you this early. I had gestational diabetes with my first.... I gained THIRTY pounds by 4 months and the still refused to test me even when I asked them to. They said that GD would not develop until after 20 weeks in a pregnancy. I FINALLY got them to test me at 17 weeks and I DID have GD. Then with my second pregnancy they still said that even though I had a previous pregnancy with GD there was still no need to test until after 20 weeks blah blah blah.... I just began my diabetic diet right off the bat and controlled my weight gain VERY well with that one. I DID test later in the pregnancy to have it though.... and somehow with with pg #3 I never developed it at all and only gained 28 pounds (70 lbs with my first and 40 lbs with my second).
I think it is amazing that you have a doc who will actually admit that it will show up earlier in a pg and test for it.

Re: Gestational diabetes?
Took the test today. I'm thinking I'm not going to hear anything until Wednesday or Thursday.
Lindsey, thanks for offer, I will probably take you up on that. Shanna, they say that when it shows up in the first round of blood work, which mine did (the doc ordered a sugar test because I am overweight to begin with), it was probably there before the pregnancy, just undiagnosed. I'm going to have to do everything in my power to lose ALOT of weight after the baby is born so that if I do have diabetes, it has a chance of going away.

Re: Gestational diabetes?
I have been GD for all three of my pregnancies and probably will be for this one too. For my second and third baby my midwives had me do all my food food planning using the glycemic index. If you have never heard of it before you can check it out here.

Re: Gestational diabetes?
I had GD with my first pregnancy and it was kind of a pain but, for me, pretty manageable. The good thing about finding out early means that you will have a good idea of how to handle it before it gets out of control.
My fingers are crossed that everything comes back negative, though. That would, of course, be best. ![]() Good luck and be sure to let us know! |

Re: Gestational diabetes?
I was so glad to see a few threads about GD, I am due in Dec, this is baby #3 and I was diagnosed at 24 weeks on my last pregnancy, so they tested me early this time around and sure enough I am. It has been a rough ride, I was still dealing with MS and all when I first found out which is finally clearing up now that I have hit the 13 week mark, yah!
So for those of you who have GD or diabetes in general, any hints and tips? I am so not a creative cook and mealtime has become the bane of my existence. I agree with the pps though, it does help you maintain your weight. I was only 3 pounds past pre preggo weight 6 days after DS #2 was born. So i try to focus on that since it seems the only good thing
