oh, okay- I only watched the first 3 minutes where they said "fluid is low, have to get the baby out". Sorry I didn't have all of the facts

I figured you hadn't seen that part since you turned it off. And I do agree with you that making a hasty decision about early induction is not good and can lead to other problems. I'm laying here trying to prevent a preemie, so that issue is one that is really important to me, too. We got both my girls to 39 weeks and hope/pray that this one makes it to at least 37 .

low fluid is a problem because the baby drinks and essentially pees out the amniotic fluid and it helps with lung production. low fluid is dangerous as it also provides a cushion for the baby. i had low fluid with my dd and ds3 it is also an inidcator of kidney problems, my son required surgery to remove his kidney. dd has vescortical reflux in her kidneys which requires monitoring every six months.

yep, fluid checks are an indication of how the baby is doing, not just the amount of fluid present is a problem in itself. If the fluid is low, then the kidneys are having a low output, since the baby drinks and pees the amniotic fluid out in utero. SO by having low fluid, it's an indication that the baby is no longer thriving, the placenta isn't working as well, and will the baby most likely be better helped on the outside.

OP- do you have ANY medical background?? by the sounds of it, you dont. i have said this before and i will say it again, docs and nurses are not out to get their patients. they do have their best interests in mind, believe it or not. some internet research does not equal the years of schooling and training someone in the medical field has

Re: this is why i should not watch TLC..

Ugh.. these kind of judgments bug the crud out of me I have 3 kids.. all born early.
My boys were induced by breaking my water at 35 and 32 weeks due to bleeding from partial placental abruptions. Thank you very much but I'd much rather have preemies than lose a child due to a severe abruption

DD was born at 34 weeks, a day after they stopped the nifedipine for preterm labor. At the point when she was born, my blood pressure was skyrocketing and I was developing pre-eclampsi (I also had protein in my urine).

I just can't carry babies to term.. my body CANNOT handle it.. and FWIW my 34 and 35 weekers were completely healthy and home in 3 days. There ARE situations where premature delivery is necessary and in the best interest of the baby (and mother).

Re: this is why i should not watch TLC..

I'm an RN and neither I or my fellow nurses or docs are out to get our patients. We always want what is best for them. It is easy to think you know the full scope of what is going on medically but you don't. No one wants to see babies born ill or babies die- no one wants an unnecessary csection- it is so much more of a liability on the docs for them to deliver surgically vs vaginally. If the country was not so "SUE happy" then the docs could probably make different decisions but it is not the world we live in and they must do what will end with a healthy mom and baby.

Low fluid can be a problem or indicative of a problem. Or it can just be that mom is dehydrated. It would be prudent to hydrate mom and check the fluid again in 12-24 hours.
